Joseph was the eldest of four children born to James Agustus Ryan (1861-1927) and Anna "Annie" Burns (1862-1931) who married on 25 Nov 1891. His younger siblings were Ella (b.1894), John (1896-1916) and Frank Clarence (1899-1960).

I found Joseph with his family on the 1900 Census, living at 407 Reese St. in Sandusky, Erie, Ohio. His father was earning a living as a "Plane (carpentry tool) Maker". Strangely, Joseph does not appear on the 1910 Census with his family. In his place is a mysterious daughter named "Deloris A" born circa the same year as Joseph who did not appear on the 1900 Census, and would not appear on the 1920 Census with the family--a joke by the family or a really bad error on the part of the enumerator?
He appears again with the family on the 1920 Census, working as an accountant.

Joseph never married. He graduated from Sandusky H.S. in 1911. He then attended Sandusky Business School, earning an accounting degree sometime between 1913 and 1917. On his 1917-18 WWI Registration, he gave "Accountant" as his occupation and "Booth Fisheries Co." as his employer. He was tall and slender with black hair and brown eyes. According to his obituary, Joseph was a member of Sandusky Lodge 285 and of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He was also an avid bowler.

Joseph died in 1921, just shy of his 29th birthday, of a "lingering illness". He was laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
