Thomas Shelton, 75 (born circa 1836), died May 4, 1911 at his home, 2206 12th Ave., S. Nashville. He was born in Rutherford County and at the outbreak of the Civil war enlisted in the Confederate Army. He was captured in TN and brought to Nashville where he was offered his freedom if he would sign the oath of allegiance. He refused and was taken to a northern prison where he was incarcerated until the end of the war. He settled on a farm and afterwards conducted a livery stable on College Street for 15 years. He is survived by his wife and 5 daughters, Mrs. Toombs; Mrs. M. A. Harris; Mrs. W. D. Haynes; Miss Addie Shelton, Nashville; Mrs. J. C. Britton, Smyrna; 5 brothers, P. A. Shelton; Joe Shelton, Charles Shelton, E. P. Shelton, Nashville; W. B. Shelton, Franklin; 3 sisters, Mrs. Adolphus Coleman; Miss Winnie Shelton, Smyrna; Mrs. C. B. Green, Nashville. Mt Olivet Cemetery.
