Mrs. St. John had moved to New York from her native Panama in the 1960's. The young mother worked as a housekeeper, and later as a cook, slowly earning money to bring one child at a time to join her in the U.S., until she managed to bring all 7 of her children.

Over the years, she suffered from diabetes, lung and heart problems and a stroke. Mrs. St. John died as the result of a power outage due to Superstorm Sandy which caused a loss of power to her oxygen machine and her backup tank sprang a leak. As her daughter sought to find the source of the leak and repair it in the darkness, Mrs. St. John called her to her side and gave her a hug and a kiss and asked to be turned toward the window. Unable to call 911 due to the power outage, Mrs. St. John's grandson ran down 22 flights of stairs and to the hospital where he convinced 2 paramedics to come with him but, sadly, Mrs. Saint John has passed by the time they arrived.
