The obituary of Mantie (Ison) Whitaker as published in the December 30, 1948, issue of The Mountain Eagle (page 1):

Mrs. Mantie Whitaker Dies of Stroke While Vacationing in Fla.

Mrs. Mantie Whitaker, 62, died suddenly from a stroke she suffered while vacationing in Florida. She had been there since the first of November for her health. She died Sunday at Fort Myers, Fla., becoming ill on Christmas Day.

Mrs. Whitaker and her deceased husband were two of the best known people in Southeastern Kentucky and her passing writes finis to one of the most colorful political careers in the mountains of Kentucky. "Aunt Mantie", as all her friends called her, was one of the joiliest and sweetest persons it has been our privilege to know. She had not been in good health for many years, being a diabetic, but always even though she was very sick could smile so sweetly and lovingly among her many friends and family. She always went to church and to funeral services far and near and always was seated at the honored table wherever she happened to visit in this county.

Upon the death of her husband, the late Fess Whitaker, she was appointed to fill the remainder of his term as jailer and thereafter was elected to two consecutive terms for this same office.

At this time we cannot help but bow our heads in sadness at the passing of Mrs. Mantie Whitaker, and bow our heads to Him "who doeth all things well." We loved Mrs. Whitaker, she was our neighbor and friend for many years and at this time it seems impossible to express the kindly feeling we had for her in our hearts. We can only say that Letcher county has lost one of its best and finest citizens - one who will be missed but remembered for many years to come.

Mrs. Whitaker is survived by one son, Dudley of Jackson, Ky., and Mrs. Cara Lee Hitt of Paris Pike, Lexington, Ky. and several grandchildren.

The body was returned here and burial services will be held today (Thursday) at the Presbyterian Church. The body will be interred in the Whitaker Cemetery at the Mouth of Caudill's Branch.
