Gerritt was born in Hackensack, New Jersey to Gerritt Hopper Holdrum and Rosa Osteen on July 21, 1933. The Holdrum family had been an old, old family from the Bergen County, New Jersey and Rockland County, New York area. His roots go back to the earliest settlers in the 1700s who forged that area into the prosperous area it is today.

Though born in Bergen County, New Jersey, his parents moved to Homestead, Florida early in his life, and Homestead is where he spent most of his youth. He married Diane R. Corneiro in June 1956 in Dade County, Florida. By 1961, the family had moved to Lakeland, Florida.

He proudly served his country during the Korean conflict in United States Navy. Following his service, he entered employ with the United States Post Office and was s supervisor at the time of his death.

Gerritt and his family were active members of Christ The King Episcopal Church.

He died from a heart attack on Saturday, July 20, 2002 at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center at the age of 68. His wife, two sons, daughter, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren survived him at the time of his death.
