Fan (Daniel) Kung was born in 1935 in Guangdong province, China. He spent his early years in Taiwan, living in Kaohsiung and Taipei. He earned his Bachelors of Science from National Taiwan University.

He then went to the United States to continue his education, first earning a Masters of Science at the Oregon State University then his Doctorate at Michigan State University. After a short stint with the US Forest Service, he began his research and teaching career at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. After retiring, Fan moved to Issaquah.

Singing and his faith were two constants in Fan's life. Wherever he went, Fan was always a member of a chorus - many times more than one. In addition, he was always active in Bible study groups, particularly, the Chinese Bible Study in Carbondale and the Bible study group at the Evangelical Chinese Church of Seattle - Redmond Campus.

Fan was married to Ester Ling Han Kung, who passed away in 2005. In 2009, Fan met Maria Ta Lin Wu and they were married in 2011.

Fan passed away peacefully during his daily mid-afternoon nap. In addition to Maria, Fan is survived by his sons, Samuel, Jonathan and David.
