Mr. Jan Crutchfield of Hermitage, Tennessee (TN) formerly of Franklin, TN, was a durable and successful songwriter who worked for many years in the music industry. Raised in Paducah, Kentucky, Mr. Crutchfield wrote a bevy of notable songs, including Dream On Little Dreamer, I'm Living In Two Worlds, Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger and It Turns Me Inside Out, which was recorded by Lee Greenwood and produced by Mr. Crutchfield's brother, Jerry Crutchfield a music executive who produced Lee Greenwood's Grammy-winning I.O.U.

His songs were recorded by various artists including Jack Greene, Faron Young and numerous pop music artists, including Brian Collins, Perry Como and Dean Martin . His more acclaimed songs were Statue of a Fool, which was recorded several times and It Turns Me Inside Out, nominated by the Country Music Association (CMA) for Song of The Year. Mr. Crutchfield also wrote several other songs that were recorded by Lee Greenwood. Nominated twice for the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Mr. Crutchfield was credited with many gold and platinum albums. Mr. Crutchfield's first BMI award came for Down By The River, a 1963 single for Faron Young, published by Doyle and Teddy Wilburn's Sure-Fire Music.

His signature song, Statue of a Fool was first recorded in 1969 by Jack Greene. Released as a single, it became a No. 1 chart song. Brian Collins subsequently record and released it in 1974 from his second album, This Is Brian Collins. It peaked at No. 10 on the country charts. David Ruffin, formerly of The Temptations, also recorded a version of the song in 1975. Bill Medley, formerly of The Righteous Brothers, released a rendition in 1979. In 1989, it was recorded by country music artist Ricky Van Shelton and it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
