Sunday, November 4, 2012

Vilma L. Kozel, 91, of Fort Dodge passed away Friday, November 2, 2012 at Tompkins Memorial Health Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 7th at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Allen Henderson officiating. Burial will follow at North Lawn Cemetery. A visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home.

Vilma is survived by her loving children and their spouses, Thomas and Annabelle Kozel of Reno, NV; Douglas and Joan Kozel of Madison, WI; Deborah Kozel of Minneapolis, MN; and Kevin and Michelle Kozel of Golden, CO; 5 grandchildren: Scott, Robert, Patrick, Jennifer, and Nicholas; 12 great-grandchildren: Thomas, Andrew, Aidan, Paul, Megan, Evan, Eric, Liam, Shea, Quinn, Darcy, and Eli; and Vilma's sister, Verona Smith and her husband Richard of Holmen, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Alvina (Kiehn) Moench; husband, Lumire (Bud), in 2003; and brothers, Roy and Ivan Moench.

Vilma was born on February 1, 1921 on a farm in Deer Creek Township near Clare, Iowa. She graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High and attended Fort Dodge Junior College where she studied journalism. On Christmas Day, 1942, Vilma married Lumire Kozel, her husband for the next 60 years. During WWII she worked at Camp Bowie, in Brownwood, Texas as a medical secretary near where her husband was stationed.

As a homemaker, Vilma was devoted to raising her four children, encouraging all of them to go to college. After her children left home, she worked with her husband at their dry cleaning business, Kozel Kleeners, located on the Fort Dodge city square, until their retirement in 1980. She participated in Women of St. Paul's circles, and the Czech Heritage group for many years. She learned to oil paint in retirement, and enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading. Vilma and Bud spent many winters in San Diego and San Antonio, and in recent years she enjoyed traveling, even at 90+ years, to visit her children and grandchildren throughout the country.

A plainspoken woman, Vilma maintained an avid interest in and curiosity about the world around her throughout her life.

She lived in her home in north Fort Dodge for 61 years, becoming a resident at Bickford Cottage of Fort Dodge this past spring.

Memorial may be left to St. Paul Lutheran Church Building Fund or to the St. Paul Radio Fund.
