Mervin W. Loper, 86, of Jacksonville, died Sunday, October 28, 2012, near Literberry. He was born February 23, 1926, in Webster City, Iowa, the son of Clifford and Alfrieda Hiller Loper. He married Camilla Marie McMillan and she preceded him in death in January of 1975. He married Carol M. Taylor Grogan on October 15, 1978, and she preceded him in death on September 7, 2009.

Mr. Loper is survived by two daughters, two sons, 13 grandchildren, one great-grandson, and one sister. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sheryl A. Ford; one sister, Mava Whitney; and one brother, Merle Loper.

Mr. Loper was a graduate of Carthage College and took his first job as a science teacher in Pleasant Plains. During that time he was active in The Muni in Springfield, playing the lead role in Brigadoon and meeting his future wife Camilla.

He later moved to Fox Lake to teach before returning to Springfield in 1968 as a professor of physical science at Lincoln Land Community College. He retired from teaching in 1989 and moved to Jacksonville to be near his family.

Mr. Loper was a member of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville and had recently enjoyed attending Central Presbyterian Church in Petersburg. He was a former member of the Springfield Model A Club. Mervin enjoyed visiting his friends at the Jacksonville Area Senior Center and giving his support to local veteran's causes.
