Leonard Elo Ortmann answered the call from his Lord and Savior on Friday, November 2, 2012, at the age of 85 years, 9 months, 17 days.

Leonard was born the second child to William and Lillie Wehman Ortmann on January 16, 1927 in the Three Oaks Community in Wilson County, Texas where he grew up and attended Dewees School.

He was baptized on March 6, 1927 at First Lutheran Church in Floresville and confirmed in the faith on March 29, 1942 at St. John Lutheran Church in Poth, Texas.

Leonard served two years in the U.S. Army, of which most of his time was spent in Germany.

On June 6, 1948 he married Marilyn Mosmeyer at First Lutheran Church of Floresville. They lived and worked together on a farm in the Three Oaks Community; there a son and daughter were born. In 1952 they bought a home in Floresville and Leonard went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad, due to the big drought, where he worked for eleven years. In 1963 he went back to full time farming and ranching.

After living in Floresville for 31 years, he and his wife built a home on one of their farms in 1983 and moved back to the Three Oaks Community.

Leonard was active in the Floresville Volunteer Fire Department for 31 years, where he served as Fire Marshall for several years. He was active in his church serving on the church council as chairperson a number of times, also active with the new addition and a member of the Church Brotherhood. In the early 1970's the usher corps was formed. Leonard was appointed head usher of one the teams and remained faithful until his health began to fail him. He was a member of the Wilson County Farm Bureau serving as chairman and vice chairman several years; served on the F.S.A. committee as secretary, vice chairman and chairman. He was a member of the Floresville Peanut Festival Association for several years; a lifetime member of the VFW Post 8555 in Poth; member of the American Legion Post 38 in Floresville; member of Hermann Sons Lodge 272, Poth; member of Crime Stoppers since the beginning, resigning in 2008. He also served on the Ag Committee; with the tax appraisal board; and a member of Poth Young Farmers.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lillie Wehman Ortmann; his brother, William "Bill" Ortmann, his sister, Lillian Ortmann Stahl Schultz; and two brothers-in-law, Harold Stahl and Harold Heimer.

Leonard is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Marilyn Ortmann; son, Thomas Ortmann; daughter, Barbara Ortmann Lohse and husband William; his sister, Luella Ortmann Heimer; his sister-in-law, Betty Ortmann; his grandchildren, Matthew Lohse and wife Jennifer, Ashley Ortmann Kennedy and husband Rev. Chris Kennedy, Mandi Lohse Fontenot and husband Robby, Karissa Ortmann, Tyler Ortmann and wife Courtny; and his two great grandsons, Tyce Henry Fontenot and Caleb Michael Kennedy.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 P.M. Monday, and a prayer service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Monday, November 5, 2012, at Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at First Lutheran Church in Floresville, co-officiated by Pastor John Conrad and Rev. Chris Kennedy. Interment will follow at Dewees Cemetery in Wilson County, Texas. Serving as pallbearers will be Matthew Lohse, Tyler Ortmann, Robby Fontenot, Randy Ortmann, Harold Heimer Jr., and Gerald Boysen. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Boening, Leon Johnson, Leslie Baumann, and Paul Traeger. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 1106 6th street, Floresville, Texas 78114; or to a charity of your choice.
