Garrison J. Boyle III, 87 of Bowling Green died Monday October 29, 2012 in Bowling Green Health and Rehab Center. "Mr." Boyle became "Private" Boyle in 1942 when he joined the US Army. He began training with General George Patton's brigade at Ft. A. P. Hill, and ultimately served with him in the African desert as a motorcycle messenger. He quickly ascended the ranks, went to OCS and became an aviator. It was at this time hat "Lieutenant" Boyle served in the Korean War as a helicopter pilot. In 1962, "Captain" Boyle and his team of test pilots set 7 worlds records in the HU1B Huey for flying faster, higher, longer, etc. than anyone else had done. He was chosen for, attended and passed ASTRONAUT TRAINING, but decided to remain a helicopter pilot instead. "Major" Boyle was given the honor of being selected to become Aircraft Carrier certified through many takeoffs and landings on its deck. For this, he was presented with an actual "tail hook". In 1967 "Lt. Colonel" Boyle was sent to serve in yet another combat zone, the Viet Nam War. This time he was a rescue pilot for downed helicopter crews and ground personnel while having his helicopter fly through both nonstop gunfire and Agent Orange. His military career spanned 32 years, at which time "Colonel" Boyle was stationed at the Pentagon where he retired in 1974 as the Army's senior test pilot. His many awards included both the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He and his wife Julia settled in Bowling Green where he was very active in both the VFW and the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Julia Martin Boyle; his daughter, Cathy Kuhns and her husband George of Milford; his daughter in law, Judy Boyle of King George; four grandchildren, Darrel Simpkins, Matthew Hoover, Michael Boyle and Brian Boyle and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Garrison J. Boyle IV. A funeral service will be held Friday, November 2, 2012 in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with Rev. Jimy Edwards officiating. Burial, with Military Honors with follow in Lakewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Thursday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to the VFW or Bowling Green United Methodist Church.
