Viola Sexton, 82, a resident of Burlington, passed away at home on Tuesday, October 30th 2012. She was born on June 11th 1930, to Neils and Myrtle Rasmussen (Thomsen) of Arlington, WA. As a small child, she enjoyed working with her father tending the family farm and playing with her cousins.

Viola graduated valedictorian from Arlington High School and then proceeded to WSU where she graduated with honors receiving a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. At the age of 77, she joined her college classmates on a trip to WSU for a celebration entitled, Honoring the Legacy of Women in Athletics.

She began her teaching career at Sedro-Woolley High School as a physical education instructor. At Cascade Middle School she enjoyed teaching P.E. as well as coaching girls' sports. Viola was passionate about the importance of the teaching profession and was heavily involved in the Sedro-Woolley Education Association.

She and her husband, David Sexton of Sedro-Woolley, began their life together in 1955 in Skagit County where they were dairymen and raised cabbage and beet seed. She took a seven year leave from teaching to devote herself to raising their three daughters Peggy, Patti and Gail.

After retirement, some of the activities Viola participated in included caring for the family farm, tending garden, canning, baking pies, volunteering with SHEBA, donating blood, being the "spud lady" at the local food bank and battling squirrels. She enjoyed a deep connection with her family and friends, and cherished teaching her grandchildren the joys of farming and a job well done.

Viola was preceded in death by their infant son, John Curtis Sexton, her parents Neils and Myrtle Rasmussen, and her brother James Rasmussen.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, David Sexton; her daughters, Peggy Tran of Everett, Patti Schneider (Tim) of Montesano, and Gail Sexton of Seattle. She was blessed with six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous treasured nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Bruce Mathey and the wonderful staff at the North Puget Cancer Center of United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley. They would also like to thank Hospice NW for their compassionate guidance.

A public celebration of life for Viola will be held from 1:00-4:00 PM, on Saturday, November 10th, 2012, in the cafeteria of Cascade Middle School: 201 N. Township Street, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Viola with a donation to North Puget Cancer Center, 2000 Hospital Drive, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284.
