Co. E 9th Reg't New Hampshire Vol. - Civil War.
GAR Member of the James B. Perry Post #13.
From Jesse Dewey's Honor Roll Book - GAR Records: *Charles O. Hurlbutt: enlisted 8.1.1862; mustered 8.8.1862 in Co. E 9th Reg't NH Vols. He was with his regiment and saw fierce fighting at South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg and other battles almost equally well known. He was a splendid soldier, a good citizen, always ready to do his part, and he did it well. As has been said of him by another, ‘he was liked for his cheery personality, his big heart, and his readiness to help in trouble. The poor never appealed to him in vain; he would greatly discommode himself to assist an unfortunate out of difficulty; and it was all done so quietly, so genuinely, that men liked him.' He died at Lebanon 5.25.1904. "Peace to his ashes."
