Nora A. Umiker, 90, of Lancaster, passed away at Homestead Village Retirement Community, Lancaster on Friday, November 2, 2012. She was born in Windermere, England on July 3, 1922 to the late Ralph A. and Nora Longmire Burton, who moved to the United States with their seven children the following year.

She was the wife of the late Dr. William O. Umiker, to whom she was married for 63 years until his passing. Nora was raised in Norfolk, VA, where she met Dr. Umiker, when he was stationed there at the Norfolk naval base during World War II. Nora enjoyed the life of a Navy wife, particularly the adventure of moving from state to state. After leaving the Navy in 1954, Dr. Umiker taught at the University of Michigan's School of Medicine and they lived in Ann Arbor. They settled in Lancaster in 1960.

Nora will be greatly missed by her three daughters, Lynn. C. Bailey, wife of Rodney Bailey of Williamsport, Jean Umiker-Sebeok, wife of Mark T. Day, of Chevy Chase, MD, and Susanne Spurlock of Lancaster. Nora is also survived by six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews in Norfolk, VA, Buffalo, NY, and Poland, Ohio.

Nora was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a tireless volunteer for many organizations, including Head Start, St. Joseph Hospital Medical Auxiliary, St. Joseph Hospital gift shop, Homestead Village Retirement Community, and the Iris Club. She was a long term member of the Hamilton Club, Lancaster Riding and Tennis Club, and the Iris Club. Nora and Bill also enjoyed attending meetings and events as members of TROA, The Retired Officers Association and they regularly participated in Quest for Learning seminars in Lancaster. She took pleasure in her years on the duckpin bowling team at the Hamilton Club, gardening, reading, walking, and was an enthusiastic fan and supporter of live theater. She particularly liked travel with her husband, when he attended various medical conferences and WWII reunions all over the country. She was an avid University of Michigan fan.

There will be a private memorial gathering of close family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125 or www.hospiceandcommunitycare.org.
