Miriam Stamps McCafferty departed this life on November 1, 2012. She was born March 25, 1925, in McComb, Mississippi. She was valedictorian of the McComb High School Class of 1943. She was an accomplished pianist, organist, and alto singer. She graduated from Millsaps summa cum laude in 1946. While at Millsaps, she played French horn in the Jackson symphony and was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity. In 1947, she earned a Master's in Library Science form the University of North Carolina. That same year she married World War II Marine Corps veteran, James Thomas McCafferty, Jr.

While her husband studied at Emory University's Candler School of Theology in Atlanta Georgia, Miriam worked as the government documents librarian in the main branch of the Atlanta Public Library.

Upon her husband's graduation and ordination as a minister in the Methodist Church (now the United Methodist Church), the couple served Methodist Churches in North Mississippi, including Caledonia, Vaiden, West, Emory, Bowling Green, Tupelo Wesley, Marks, Iuka, Clarksdale St. Paul's, Leland, New Albany, Indianola, and Amory. They also served Summit United Methodist Church. During that time, Miriam worked as a public school librarian in Clarksdale, Greenville, and New Albany, and as a city librarian in Indianola.

Miriam was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and friend. She patiently taught her children through precept and example. She modeled servanthood and demonstrated every day of her life an unswerving commitment to duty, caring for her mother and her husband in their latter years.

She had a superior mind, was a voracious reader, loved operas. She was a member Centenary United Methodist Church, the Cecilian Circle, the Nautilus Club, and the 13 club.

Miriam was predeceased by her parents, her husband, one brother, the late B. G. Stamps, of Titusville, Florida. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Boyd Stamps, of Titusville, Florida, five nieces and nephews, daughter Susannah McCafferty Sanders, son-in-law Jan Boykin Sanders, grandson Andrew Thomas Sanders and his wife, Celeste Willis Sanders, great-granddaughters Mary Wennerlund and Ann Margaret Sanders, all of Greenville, Mississippi; granddaughter Ann Claire Sanders Achey and husband Elias Achey, great-granddaughter Miriam Margot), all of Grand Haven, Michigan; Son, James T. McCafferty III, daughter-in-law Malinda Hamilton McCafferty, granddaughters Sarah Ruff McCafferty, Martha Hamilton McCafferty, and Miriam Margot McCafferty, all of Jackson, Mississippi; granddaughter Elizabeth Leigh McCafferty, Ft. Worth, Texas; and grandson Daniel Jackson McCafferty, Houston, Texas.

Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 5, at Centenary United Methodist Church, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. and a graveside service. Memorials may be sent to Centenary United Methodist Church, 500 Delaware Avenue, McComb, Mississippi 39648; 601.684.6698.
