Don E. Maines, 91, Anderson, passed away January 18, 2006 at Community Hospital after an extended illness.

He was born April 16, 1914 in Utica, Ohio, the son of Paul E. and Anna (Williamson) Maines, and lived in Anderson most all of his life. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and Plaster's Union, Fellowship Masonic Lodge 681, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, Murat Temple and the Indianapolis Musicians Union.

Don's father, Paul, moved to Shirley to work in a glass factory in nearby Wilkinson. When those factories closed his father became a plasterer and later moved to Anderson. With the help of his sons, they plastered many local residences and commercials buildings. During the war, Don worked as a tool maker in Anderson and plastered part-time. After the war he began plastering full-time and later bought into his father's company in 1948. After his father's retirement he was joined in the business by his brother, Jerry. They concentrated on commercial construction and built the business into one of the largest and most respected interior contractors in the state, doing most of the commercial projects in the Anderson, Muncie, Marion and Kokomo areas. Following his brother's retirement, Don retired from Paul Maines & Son in 1980.

One of the most important parts of Don's life was music. He played the piano and trumpet and wrote all the arrangements for the Don Maines Orchestra. During the big band era his 15-piece orchestra performed at many popular dance venues in Indiana such as The Green Lantern, Mount Lawn and Lake James just to name a few. In the 1970s he began having jam sessions with many local musicians and his orchestra began performing again at the Anderson Elks. In addition to music he loved the outdoors, spent many weekends hunting and fishing on his farm in Southern Indiana, and playing golf at Edgewood Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Maines, whom he married in 1938; thee sons, Bill (wife-Connie) Maines of Chicago, Steve (wife-Kelli) Maines of Munie, and Tom (wife-Rita) Maines of Anderson; eight grandchildren, Susan Maines, Kathy Maines, Stephanie Bateman, Lynley Maines, Natalie Maines, Nick Maines, Michael Maines, and Katie Maines; three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Bateman, Hunter Bateman, and Megan Maines; two brothers, Lester (wife-Loraine) Maines of Anderson, and Jerry (wife-Ellen) Maines of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Maines, Jr.

Service will be at noon Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Brown-Butz Diedring Funeral Home with the Rev. Kaye Casterline officiating. Burial will be in East Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
