Notes for Harriett Stewart:
Harriett Stewart Patton: June 28, 1866-October 1, 1947
Harriett, prior to her marriage, moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, living with her sister, Jennie Bean, and working in a well-known bookstore. At the age of 28, Harriett married Charles L. Patton born in Villisca, Iowa on July 1, 1857. Charles's parents were also early settlers. Charles's and Harriett lived in Atlanta, Georgia where Charles headquartered as a public relation representative for the Burlington Railroad. Harriett rated the family title of "SAVER" and "INVESTOR" It was alleged that she saved and invested one-half of Charles's salary throughout their married life. Her investments included an apartment house, a business property, cotton stock, and un-mounted diamonds. She lived in a large house on Peach Street, today the center of Atlanta. She, also, had the Stewart sense of humor and liked to tell jokes. Charles seemed to be unlike Harriett in the thrift area. He wore expensive clothing, smoked the top grad of cigars, and occasionally drank the best whiskey. He did let the family know that Harriett was rather wealthy. In the mid 30's Charles retired and moved back to Villisca and lived in the families home. He enjoyed living the life of an affluent gentleman and the town philosopher in the small town of Villisca. On January 15th, 1940, Charles passed away at age 82. Harriet failed after Charles death, made friends with some questionable characters, spent unwisely, and didn't keep in touch to seek advise. In 1947 Harriett passed away at the age of 81. He estate had dwindled but she still left her 18 nieces and nephews over $3,000.00 each, but never knew how wisely each heir utilized their inheritance.
