MRS. GEO. DETHLEFS, SR.

One of Manning's earliest residents is Mrs. George Dethlefs, Sr., who has called Manning her home for the past 54 years. For 52 years she has lived in the same location on 419 Ann St. The location is the same but the residence has changed completely.

Mr. Dethlefs was one of Manning's first merchants.

Mrs. Dethlefs was born Margaretha Peper, the daughter of Jurgen Peper and Anna Peters in Clove, Schleswig, Holstein Germany, April 11, 1862.

In her native land she became a member of the Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Dethlefs has one living sister, her twin, (Christina), Mrs. Hans C. Jensen of Spirit lake. three sisters and three brothers have passed away.

She came to the United States with her parents in 1873, settling in Moline, Ill., late in Davenport, then Comanche-followed by a few years on a farm in Crawford County.

She came to Manning, Carroll County in 1884, following her marriage Dec. 3, 1884 to George Dethlefs.

Nine children were born to them--four passed away in early life.

The remaining children are Fred Dethlefs, George Dethlefs, Jr., Emil Dethlefs, all of Manning; (Helen) Mrs. Dewey Voss, Ft. Dodge, Miss Hilda Dethlefs of Sioux City.

Mr. Dethlefs passed away in Manning, Nov. 1, 1932.

Mr. Dethlefs and his son, Fred established the Crystal Theatre in Manning, which Fred still operates.

Manning (THNS)--Mrs. Geo. Dethlefs, Sr. passed away at
home, 419 Ann Street, early morning. She would have been
years old in April.
Mrs. Dethlefs had been in declining health for some time.
Had been ill of heart trouble complications for about three
weeks.

The body is at Ohde Funeral Home, awaiting completion of funeral arrangements.

Mrs. Dethlefs was born Margaretha Peper, daughter of Jurgen and Anna Peper, April 1862, at Clove, Schleswig, Holstein, Germany. She had lived in Manning for sixty years. Coming
to Iowa with her parents in from Moline, Ill., the family located at Davenport and moved later to a Crawford county
Since her marriage to Dethlefs Dec. 3, 1884, in Denison
Mrs. Dethlefs had resided in Manning. Her husband died Nov.
1932.

Mrs. Dethlefs leaves five children; Fred and George, Jr. M
ing; Emil, Hastings, Neb; Dewey Voss (Helen), Ft. Dodge and Miss Hilda Dethlefs teaches in Sioux City. She had eight grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
