Fireman 2/c, U.S. Navy, World War II-Seaman Burroughs was killed when his Submarine, {S-26}, collided with another U.S. Vessel, PC-460, {Patrol Boat} on 1-24-1942 while serving with the Navy near the Gulf of Panama. The ship sits in 300 feet of water with a crew of about 46 sailors. The Capt. was Earle C. Hawk, and he survived along with two other sailors.

He is the son of Mr. George Burroughs of Pekin, Illinois & Mrs. Edith Vipond of Mapleton, Illinois, and he leaves four brothers, Charles of Pekin, Gerald of Washington, Illinois, Edward and Tommy at home, and two sisters, Mrs. Norma Caruso of 820 Widenham Street in Peoria, and Mrs. Cleora Jayne of Peoria.

Seaman Burroughs was working for Allied Mills when he enlisted in the Navy in June of 1940, and he also attended Pekin Community H.S.

Awards: American Campaign Medal, American Defense Medal, WWII Victory Medal.

Footnote: The other two sailors were Seaman Joe B. Hurst, and Seaman Robert Elwin McCraner Ward.
