William Wells VanWyngarden 87 of Mexico pssed away on Monday September 27th at Audrian Medical Center.

memorial services were held Saturday Oct 2, at 11a.m. at the Mexico United Methodist Church, visitation was from 10-11a.m. Saturday at the curch.

Wells was born December 27, 1922 in Mexico the son of Dr R.W. and Velma (Wells) VanWyngarden. He was a graduate of Mexico High School and Westminister college. He was an officier in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946. serving active sea duty in the Pacific during World War II.

After the war, he rturned to Mexico where he married Lucille Hall on August 22, 1953 and began a career at the A.P. Green company, where he worked for 34 years as a sales correspondent manager of market analysi and employee services manager. He rtired in 1986.

Wells was a member of the Uited Metodst Church of Mexico, where he served as a board mmber. Sunday School teacer, chairman of varous committees and sang in the choir for more than 30 years.

He was quite active in the community serving for 14 years on the Audrian Medical Center Board of Trustees, including one term as chairman. He served as chairman of the United Way drive and one term as chairman of the board. He also served on the Audrian Historical Society Board and the Presser Hall Board.

He joined the Mexico Kiwanis Club in 1957 and served as chapter president in 1971-1972. In 1985 he received the Kiwanis Distinguished Service Award and in 2004 received the George Hixson Award, Kiwanis international Highest onor.

Wells was a great lover of music, especiallly big bands especially big bands and jazz. He played trumpet in bans in high school, college, and in the Navy. He sang in various choirs and barbershop quartets through the years, and played trumpet in a local band called The Supressed Desires. He as also an avid golfer and spent many happy hours with friends and family on the links at Mexico Country Club.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lucille Elizabeth VanWyngarden of Mexico, and four children, and their spouces, Bruce and Tatine VanWyngarden of Memphis TN. Chris and Cathy VanWyngarden of Las Cruces, N.M. Alan and Sally Vanwyngarden of Eagan MN and Mark and Laura VanWyngarden Christenson of Mexico, grandchilren include Matt and Juniper VanWyngarden Trrell of El Paso TX. Mary VanWyngarden of Manhattan N.Y. Lauren Barnett and Dan of Mexico, and Jeff Padgett of Fulton. He leaves two great grandchildren, Anthony Torrell of El Paso TX. and four week old Collin Wells Barnett of Mexico. Mr VanWyngarden was preceded in death by his granddaughter Robin VanWyngarden in 2005, a brother, Dr Don VanWyngarden in 200 and his parents.
