Christian Garth Dead

Christian Garth, 85, a retired A.T.& S.F. employe of the mechanical department, died at his home, 1243 Highland, at 6:30 o'clock Saturday evening. He had been sick one week.

Funeral services will be held in the First Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. H. Hilton Longberry conducting the services. The casket will be open in the McVey chapel, Monday evening and Tuesday morning. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery.

Mr. Garth, one of twin sons of Thore Ellingson and Anna Arntson Garth, was born in Niesen in Surdal near Oslo, Norway, March 13, 1863. Two sisters, Bettie Johana, and a infant, also his twin brother, Edward, and another brother, Magnus, preceded him in death. Recorded in his father's diary, is their emigration in 1872 to America and to Chase county, where they settled and homesteaded land in Toledo township, and where they lived for about 20 years. He married Lura Mabel Ream in Emporia, December8, 1897. Three sons were born, including the late Bishop Schuyler Edward Garth, who with his wife, was killed in a plane accident near Hankow, China, February, 1947. Other sons are Carl Howard, of Detroit and Merle Vincent, of San Francisco, Calif. There are five grandchildren and on great grandchild.

Mr. Garth, a farmer in the Saffordville and Madison vicinities earlier in is life, came to Emporia in 1916, and took employment with the Santa Fe shop.

The Garth Funeral

Funeral services for Christian Garth who died at his home, 1243 Highland, Saturday evening, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. H. Hilton Longberry conducted the services, assisted by the Rev. Frank H. Ebright and the Rev. Dean G. Walters. Scott Mouse Jr., sang accompanied by C.H.C. Dudley.

Active pallbearers were Otis Courtney, Arthur Black, E. W. Daniels, E. E. Rinker, C. A. Meek and C. D. Long. Burial was in Memorial Lawn cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were C. L. Soule, W. R. Sutton, O. E. Brown, W. A. Heath, C. H. Rickerd, C. E. Mott, George Gadbery, W. L. Gadbery, C. H. Hill and Harry Wayman.

Out-of-town relatives and friends attending were Mr. and Mrs. Carl H. Garth, of Detroit, Mich.; Merle V. Garth, of San Francisco, Calif.; Myron L. Garth, of Kansas City, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Gillett, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. Jason Jones, of Manhattan; Mrs. Anna Mercer, of Kansas City, Kan.; Ruth Garth, of Wichita; and Mr. and Mrs. Harry C. Long, of Lebo.
