Erwin Alfred Uphoff only son of Jurgen Johann Uphoff and wife Katharina Eisenhauer Uphoff was born November 13, 1915 in Jefferson County Nebraska, on a farm near Gladstone, NE. He departed this life Monday, August 3, 2009 at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, NE at the age of 93 years.

Erwin and his parents moved to Deshler, NE on October 26, 1926. Erwin graduated from Deshler High School in 1934 and in 1940 Erwin graduated from Northwestern Radio and Television Institute in Minneapolis, MN. He was employed by the Program Service Company of Lincoln and Omaha until he was drafted into the US Army in February of 1942.

Erwin was married to Mildred Pauline Ferguson on October 10,1942 in the Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, North Carolina and to this union, one son, David was born. He served as a Radar Maintenance Instructor at the rank of Technical Sergeant, until he was honorably discharged in January of 1946. The couple returned to Deshler in early 1946 and Erwin was employed by Harold Struve's, Ernest Kassebaum's and Norman Miller's appliance stores. He later partnered with Tony Hohl in the Modern Appliance Store and retired from the Coast to Coast Store in December 1984. Erwin served on the Deshler Town Board from 1952 through 1964 and was an active member of American Legion Halfman Post #352. There he served terms as commander, adjutant, chaplain, finance officer and firing squad. He also served on the Deshler Housing Authority Board and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Presbyterian Church. He volunteered as a Boy Scout leader and will be remembered by many for providing the public address system at virtually all community and school events for many years.

Erwin remained in his home in Deshler until it was severely damaged by the tornado on June 22, 2003. He lived at the assisted facility in Geneva for a short time and then moved to Meadowlark Heights Assisted Living in Deshler on August 29, 2003. In 2005 Erwin moved to Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Erwin is survived by his wife Mildred of Deshler, NE, one son David and his wife Jane of Cunningham, KS, grandchildren Brent Uphoff and his wife Ani of Pratt, KS, Kevin Uphoff and his wife Laney of Derby, KS, and a great granddaughter Riley and nieces and nephews: Mary Gergen-Dillman, Joann Gergen-Wilson, James Gergen, Joseph Gergen, Steven Voss, Laurie Voss-Winkler, Phillip Dove Jr., Marilyn Dove, Margo Dove-Mehagian, and a host of friends.

Memorial services will be held Friday, August 7, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler, NE. Officiant Pastor Phillip Nielsen. Organist is Julia Pohlmann with congregational hymns “Sweet Hour Of Prayer”, and “How Great Thou Art”, soloist Lyle Koenig singing “In The Garden” and “Morning Has Broken” and soloist Ani Uphoff singing “On Eagles Wings”, and “On The Wings Of A Snow White Dove”. No visitation, cremation. Military graveside by Deshler American Legion Halfman Post #352. Inurnment at Deshler City Cemetery at Deshler, NE. Memorials in care of family. Deshler Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
