Omaha Daily Bee, July 24, 1898:

Council Bluffs News - John Neiger, the nephew of John Linder, who died while serving as a member of Company D, First Arkansas volunteer infantry, at Camp Chickamuaga, will be given a military funeral. The remains are expected to arrive here either tonight or early tomorrow morning and the funeral, which will be in charge of the Grand Army of the Republic post, will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning from the undertaking rooms of Charles Lunkley on Broadway. Interment will be in Walnut Hill cemetery.

It was unanimously resolved at the meeting of Abe Lincoln post, No. 29, Grand Army of the Republic, held last evening, that the post turn out as an organization and invite the Union Veteran Legion, the Union Veterans union and all old soldiers and sailors, also the High school cadets, to attend the funeral of the late John Neiger, company D, First Arkansas volunteers, whose funeral will take place Monday, July 25, at the foot of Glen avenue on Broadway. The High school cadets will act as an escort to the old soldiers and as the firing party at the grave. The pallbearers selected by the post are: Comrades Fonda, Hoon, David Cousins, Davis and Maltby.

Council Bluffs News - The remains of John Neiger, the soldier nephew of John Linder, arrived from Chickamauga Sunday and the funeral with military honors was held yesterday morning from Lunkley's undertaking establishment on Broadway. The coffin was draped with the stars and stripes, on which were placed many beautiful floral tributes and the remains were escorted to the cemetery at Walnut hill by the veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic and the High school cadets in command of Acting Captain Beardsley, the latter acting as the firing party at the grave. Members Fonda, Hoon, David Cousins, Matlby and Davis of Abe Lincoln post acted as pallbearers.
