Charles Sam Huey was a son of Herman Roy Huey and Ruby Lee Lovvorn Huey. Sam was born in 1919 and his two sisters, Elizabeth C. "Betty" and Carolyn, were born in 1923 and 1927. The family lived in Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama where Roy was in the wholesale grocery business.

Sam was named for his grandfather John Samuel "Sam" Lovvorn. His grandmother was Martha Elizabeth "Lizzie" Strain Lovvorn. Sam's paternal grandparents were Charlie C. Huey and Sally Cooper Huey.

On February 20, 1941, Sam was the only member of his family to stay home while his parents, ages 47 and 43, his two sisters, ages 17 and 13, and their chauffeur traveled from Roanoke to a funeral. Roads were in bad condition and were icy. Family members say that a tractor-trailer truck jackknifed on an icy bridge which resulted in an accident and took the lives of the Huey family as well as the chauffeur. The accident was in Tuskagee, Macon County, Alabama.

Family states that Sam never fully recovered from the loss of his family. Sam died May 26, 1952 at age 34. He was buried in Collinsville Cemetery where other relatives were interred.

Sam was a nephew of Cleveland L. Sizemore who was buried in Collinsville Cemetery. Ruby's half-sister, Eva Lovvorn Sizemore, moved to California near her daughter and died there in Los Angeles in 1960. Sam was also a nephew to Elizabeth Belle Lovvorn Currey, Orga Lovvorn Burson, Sterling B. Lovvorn and William Edward Lovvorn through his mother's family.

Over fifty years of Lovvorn family research by ngl.
