Anna Timell (Karlin) passed away on October 12, 2012, in Salisbury, Connecticut, with family by her side. She moved to Syracuse in 1962 and lived there for 45 years. In 2007, she moved to Connecticut to be closer to her children. Anna was born in Ljusdal, Sweden, on July 28, 1926. She was married to Tore Timell, a professor at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry on December 31, 1947. They met while they both were working at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and were married for nearly 60 years until Tore's death on July 11, 2007. Leaving her native Sweden behind, she and her husband immigrated first to Montreal, Canada, before settling in Syracuse, where she found great happiness. She courageously embraced her new country and language. She is survived by her three daughters, Anna M. Timell of Cornwall, CT, Britta (Nasser) Zantout of Brooklyn, NY, and Marie Timell of New York, NY, as well as four grandchildren, Maja Gray, Christine Gray, Benjamin Gray and Tarek Zantout.
A homemaker, Anna's interests and enthusiasms were many and varied. She was a member of the Syracuse University Women's club and an active bridge player. She earned the title of Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League. Anna and Tore often returned to Sweden to visit family over the years and also traveled extensively in Europe. Anna expressed her creative talents in many ways. A gourmet, she loved to cook and entertain, sharing many Swedish dishes at her dinner parties. She was adept at sewing, needlework and other handicrafts and taught these skills to her daughters and as a Girl Scout leader. Anna enjoyed decorating and antiques and became an expert at refinishing furniture. She was also active in politics and a fan of Syracuse University basketball. An avid gardener, her everlasting love of nature expressed itself in a nearly childlike delight in the natural world. This delight was fueled when, late in life, she and Tore designed and built a new home that afforded them a view of the sun setting over Syracuse. She never ceased to marvel at this daily gift. Anna will be remembered especially for her heart, which was filled with a passion for life, compassion for others and greatness of spirit. All of these remained undimmed in her, despite her affliction with dementia, even in the last years of her life. The service will be private. Contributions may be made to the Syracuse Rescue Mission.
