Luke was one of the founders of Lincoln, Nebraska. His log cabin was located at 14th and O Streets in Lincoln. There is a plaque there about his log cabin. He was born in England in 1816 and came over to the U.S. with his parents in 1820 approx. They settled in Chambersburg, Franklin Co.,PA. Luke married his first wife, Mary Maplesden in Delaware County, Ohio. Their children were Elizabeth (Lavender) Hocker, Luke Washington Lavender, and Edward J. Lavender. I believe they were divorced since Mary died in 1885 and Luke was married to his second wife before that. His second wife was Julia A. (Hilton) Hotelling-Lavender. She was married before Luke to a Hotelling and had children by her first husband. Luke and Julia had two children Alfred H. and Alvin Lavender.
Luke was the jack of all trades being a Judge, brickmaker (like his father Thomas), and other professions. Towards the end of his life his second wife Julia left him and he proceeded to Florence, Alabama where he comitted suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Luke has a file of interesting materials about him at the Nebraska Historical Society in Lincoln, Nebraska.
