Bertha Mary Kerner, the beloved wife of predeceased CSM John E. Kerner, died Tuesday, October 30th, 2012, two weeks after celebrating her 90th birthday.
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1922, Bertha was the last surviving member of the 13 sibling Snyder and Witmyer family.
Mrs. Kerner began her financial career in 1962 as a teller at the Fort Dix Federal Credit Union. Forty-seven years later, she retired as manager, a job that was her passion. Prior to that, Bertha worked as a dental assistant upon arriving at Fort Dix.
During her husband John's 33 years of Army service, Bert and John were posted from Fort Eustis and Fort Monroe, VA; to Brockton, MA; to Ft. Kobbe in the Panama Canal Zone; to Offutt Air Force Base, NE. Their next assignment was Ft. Dix, NJ, where John served as the Post Sergeant Major. A brief stay at Fort Monmouth was followed by John's retirement as Command Sergeant Major at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. The couple then settled in Mt. Holly. Bert lost her life long love when John died in 2002.
Bertha was a member of the Ft. Dix Non-Commissioned Officer's Ladies Club and the Orchid Chapter of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Kerner is survived by three daughters and a predeceased son-in-law, Brian Sperling of Wrightstown, NJ, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Burial will be Friday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
