George Stafford, devoted to family

George Earl Stafford fought against the Nazis in World War II, started his own successful business and was devoted to his family.

As his son puts it, George Stafford was just an average, nice guy. But Mr. Stafford's son, Gregory Thomas Stafford of Rising Sun, Ind., said he now understands how extraordinary that can be.

"I guess his claim to fame was being a great husband to my mother and a good dad to me," Gregory Stafford said.

"There was nothing otherwise he was famous for, but I think that was pretty good."

Mr. Stafford, 79, of Erlanger, died at 1:09 p.m. Tuesday at Village Care Center in Erlanger.

Mr. Stafford retired 15 years ago from the company he owned and managed, G. E. Stafford and Associates. He began the company after leaving the corporate world and deciding to "run his own ship," his son said.

"He really liked being the captain of his own ship where everything was based on his own success," said his son.

Mr. Stafford was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps. He was an artillery spotter and pilot who achieved the rank of captain.

He was a member of the Fort Mitchell Baptist Church, Summit Hills Country Club and Holmes

High School Alumni Association.

His first wife, Ruth Stafford, died in 1992.

His second wife, Virginia Stafford, also preceded him in death.

Other survivors include a brother, Charles Leonard Stafford of Warner Robins, Ga.; and a sister, Dorothy Evelyn Brauntz of Novato, Calif.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to Fort Mitchell Baptist Church Building Fund, 2323 Dixie Highway, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017.
