Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete, Professional Football Player. He earned the distinction as being the first African-American athlete to capture a Gold Medal in the decathlon during the 1956 Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, he initially achieved greatness in athletics during his high school years. His accomplishments earned him a place on the 1952 United States Olympic Team and he would earn a silver medal in the Men's Decathlon as he finished behind his American teammate Bob Mathias in Helsinki, Finland. While attending Indiana University, Campbell won the AAU National Championship in the decathlon in 1953 and earned All-American status as a swimmer, in addition to receiving national recognition in karate. After achieving his Olympic gold medal in 1956, he set a world record of 14.40 in the 120y hurdles (1957). He was selected by the Cleveland Browns during the 5th round of the 1957 NFL Draft and spent the 1957 season primarily as a kickoff returner with the Browns, utilizing his speed, as he appeared in 9 games. He experienced more substantial playing time professionally, during his years in the Canadian Football League (1958 to 1959, 1961 and 1964), with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts. After retiring from football, Campbell served as a lecturer and directed a program for underprivileged children in New Jersey. He was enshrined into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1989 and was the recipient of the Gold Medallion from the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2012.
