Dr. Schugens was born in Buffalo, the daughter of Carl Otto Schugens, a world famous violin maker and Civil War Veteran. She graduated from the U. B. Medical School, but like many women of that day she embarked on a career in teaching. She taught for many years at the Masten Park High School and was very active in the Women Teacher Association. She was also a member of the Physicians' League and the Scribblers, a women's literary club. Her death, on Christmas Day 1907, shocked the city and her fellow teachers. The funeral was held from the family residence at 378 Ellicott St. The Masten Park High School faculty and the Board of Education attended the service in a body. At the grave site, life long friend, fellow teacher, fellow doctor, and fellow Scribbler, Dr. Ida Bender suggested that each person drop a white carnation into the grave. The white carnation was the official flower of the Scribblers. Dr. Schugens, along with her family, is buried in Section 25, Lot 51.
