According to William Dudley's obituary in the Portsmouth Herald of April 16, 1965, William was an architect and an authority on colonial architecture and decoration. He was responsible for restoration of several landmarks including the Garrison House in Exeter and the Montbazon near Tours France. He was a past president of the Exeter Historical Society and a member of the society for the presivation of New England Antiquities. He was also a member of the prestigious society of the Cincinnati, the oldest patriotic organization, founded in 1783 by the Continental Army and thier French counterparts.
