The son of Cornelius Best and Elsie Alpaugh, he married Hannah Wilson.

"George attended Lafayette College in Easton PA for 2 1/2 years; taught at Riegelsville, and Wilmington, DE; graduated from the Medical Dept. at the Univ. of Penn 1875" ...The Men of Lafayette, 1879, pg.245

The 1900 census indicates George is a physician and they had one child.

An article in the Hunterdon County Democrat, March 27, 1930 gave Dr. Best's biography. The newspaper had a series of articles called "Our Own Family Album" where they ran pictures and readers guessed the identity and/or locations in the pictures.
"The owner of this team and wagon shown in your last issue, was Dr. George N. Best, a widely known physician of Rosemont.
Dr. Best was born October 16, 1846 at Round Valley, a son of Cornelius and Elsie Alpaugh Best. He worked on a farm as a boy and later clerked in a store.
At the age of 21, he taught in a country school, earning enough money to go to Pennington Seminary. Then he went to Lafayette College. He did not graduate there, but left to teach in a school at Riegelsville.
Later he took up the study of medicine. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1875, after which he located at Rosemont, and for fifty years he ministered to the people of that section covering a wide radius in all kinds of weather.
Dr. Best was a keen observer. He held membership in the Hunterdon County Medical Society, New Jersey Medical Society and the American Medical ASsociation. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity. The doctor had a hobby that brought considerable fame to him, namely botany. From his young manhood he had studied the plants and flowers about him. He was a member of the Torrey Botanical Club of new York and the New Jersey Natural History Society.
For many years, he was a director of the Lambertville National Bank. He had traveled extensively in Europe.
Dr. Best died at his home in Rosemont June 18, 1926, after a long illness from heart disease."
