Claud's mother died when he was about five years old. His father was an American Indian, whose name has not been discovered. His father was probably from the Indian tribe that was known to be near Custer, Michigan, where the Garns were living at the time of Claud's birth. After Claud was born, his mother married Frank Martin with whom she had a daughter Lettie, who died when Claud was young, around the time Claud's mother died. There is no evidence that Claud took the surname Martin, the surname of his stepfather.
Immediately after his mother died, Claud lived with his mother's father, Martin Garn for a while. Then he went to live with his great uncle John Hawkins, the brother of his grandmother Sarah Jane (Hawkins) Garn. At some point Claud took the Hawkins surname. We have not found evidence that John Hawkins ever formally adopted Claud.
