OBITUARY OF GESCHE HARMS AGENA
Gesche Harms Agena was born on July 19, 1850 in Neudorf, Ost Friesland, Germany and passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. John Huls October 30, 1944.
In the year 1854 she emigrated to America with her parents, who settled near Golden in Adams County, Illinois. On March 31, 1868 she was married to Jann Gaden Agena of Keokuk Junction, Illinois. Six years later, in 1874 they came out west to Nebraska settling near Sterling, in Johnson County. Here she spent most of her life on the farm just east of the Immanuel Lutheran church, a plot of which was later given to the congregation, on which now stands our school building, the former parsonage, former teacherage now the present parsonage.
Her husband died in 1903. Of the six children born to this union two preceded her in death; Martin and Bernhard.
Though she was a woman acquainted with sorrows of sickness, the Lord granted her to live to the ripe old age of 94 years, 3 months and 11 days. Her last 14 years she had spent with her daughters Mrs. John Hesterman and Mrs. John Huls. Finally last Monday afternoon the Savior called his suffering servant home to those mansions in Paradise, which He had also prepared for her, and for which she so anxiously awaited and longed. Her death was the result of the infirmities of old age.
She leave to mourn her departure four children; Mrs. John Hesterman, Sterling; Mr. Harm Agena, Adams; Mrs. John Huls, Sr., Sterling and Mrs. Gade Agena, Sterling; 26 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
