In 2002 he retired and became an active member of the Central Iowa Mineral Society, the Golden K Kiwanis, The Des Moines Engineers Club and a mentor at Findley Elementary School. He traveled extensively visiting numerous countries on six continents, always curious, always interested. He was adept in the use of his personal computer and e-mail, and also enjoyed reading, woodworking, fishing, and spending time with his family.
