Born Werfen, Sankt Johann Im Pongau, Salzburg, Austria. Was married to Rosina Winghofer. Birth and death dates and places unknown.
In Austria the Grubers came from the province of Karnten (Carinthia) which is nestled among the mountains. It is slightly warmer in winter than other parts of Austria, slightly cooler in the summer. It is known for sunshine which draws skiers to its slopes and warms the lakes in the summer. People settled here as early as the bronze age. The Romans were here and when they departed about 600 A.D., they left the area to the Slovenes, then known as Carinthians, thus giving the region its name. The Hapsburgs took over in 1335 and most of Carinthia has been Austrian ever since.
-The corn mill dwelling in which the Grubers lived was located just outside of St. Johann Am Pressen in a little valley. A piece of crumbling wall is still visible as of 1990.
