Elynor Dorothy Kaufman died August 7, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital, just three weeks prior to her 91st birthday.
Mrs. Kaufman was born on August 28, 1909 in Chicago, IL to Frank J. Jensik (b. Prague, Czech Republic) and Anna Bily, who lived in the ethnic Bohemian community of Chicago.
The youngest of eight siblings, Mrs. Kaufman graduated from the Carl Schurz High School in Chicago. She was an enthusiastic flapper who was an expert at the Charleston. She won a number of dance contests and was a dance instructor for a time.
Married on June 10, 1931 to Eli J. Kaufman, a contractor and commercial fisherman, Mrs. Kaufman moved to Fort Atkinson, WI, where she lived most of her adult life.
In addition to being a devoted homemaker, during the depression Mrs. Kaufman began selling chicken dinners out of her kitchen at 35 cents a plate. This endeavor, over a number of years, evolved into a family restaurant ''Kaufman's'', owned and operated with her husband and her brother and sister-in-law, Vern and Betty Kaufman. The restaurant was eventually converted into a motel in the 1960s.
Mrs. Kaufman was a talented bowler, winning a number of team trophies, as well as a devoted bridge player. She was well known for her skills as a baker, particularly her perfection of the Bohemian kolacky and hoska.
Mrs. Kaufman was preceded in death by her husband in 1979 and soon after she began spending winters with her son, Professor Glen F. Kaufman of the University of Georgia, in Athens, where she made many friends. In 1997 she moved to Athens permanently to live with her son.
Mrs. Kaufman is survived by her son, Glen Kaufman of Athens; a daughter and son-in-law, Karolyn and John Berhow of Bark River, MI; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Kurk and Paula Anderson of Kohler, WI, and Page and Jeanne Kaufman of Atlanta; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Krystin and John Branciforte of Petodky, MI; granddaughter, Kari Anderson of Superior, WI; great grandsons, Shane and Marcus Anderson of Kohler, WI and Lee Kaufman of Atlanta, and great granddaughter, Katherine Anderson of Kohler, WI.
