The Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, Order of Carmelites, mourns the death of the Reverend Anthony (Joseph) Palo, O. Carm.,
who died at the age of 81 on November 25,2011, at Holy Cross Hospital in Teaneck, New Jersey.
Father Anthony was born to (the late) Joseph Andrew Palo, and (the late) Anna Elizabeth (Batanus) Palo on March 10, 1930, in Plymouth,
Pennsylvania. He is survived by his sisters Geraldine Keefe, Audrey Lucas, and a brother, Robert. A sister, Joan, preceded him in death.
Joseph Palo attended Holy Trinity Grade School and later Central Grade School, both in Plymouth, Pennsylvania. In 1942 he entered
Plymouth Junior High School and in 1945 Plymouth High School from which he graduated in 1948.After graduation, Joseph joined the United States Navy and served as a Petty Officer Second Class until his honorable discharge, May 13,
1952. He then went to Penn State University from which, in 1956, he received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He was also president of the
Delta Sigma Phi fraternity his senior year. He was then employed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation.He entered the Carmelites in 1958 at Niagara Falls, ONT., and professed simple vows as a Carmelite on August 15,1960, taking the religious name Anthony. Continuing his studies at Whitefriars Hall, Anthony made his solemn profession of vows on February 5, 1964, and was ordained to the priesthood the following May 27th.
Father Anthony received a M.A. in Education in 1967 from Saint Bonaventure University. He also held a certificate in psychotherapy which he received in 1976, and a certificate in Family Therapy which he received in 1994. He taught for a time at in the psychology department of Rockland Community College in Rockleigh, NJ.
He was fond of time with his family, often visiting farms in New Jersey to pick fresh fruits and vegetables, then canning them, and ultimately sharing them with family and friends in the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania.
He was also noted for his homemade fudge and pierogies. Father Anthony began his Carmelite ministry in 1965 teaching at Carmel High School in Mundelein, Illinois. After seven years there, Father Anthony became an associate pastor at Saint Mary Parish in Closter, New Jersey. In 1976 he moved to Norwood, New Jersey, where he became associate pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish. After serving 15 years in parishes in New Jersey, Father Anthony moved to Louisville,
Kentucky, where he served eight years at Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish. In 1988 he moved back to New Jersey, to Saint Joseph Church
in Bogota, where he became pastor.In 1993, Father Anthony moved to Chicago, Illinois, and took a well deserved sabbatical at Brandsma House where he completed his certificate program in Family Therapy from Northwestern University.
In 1994 he moved back to New Jersey, and became a spiritual director psychotherapist, while he resided at Saint Cecilia priory, in Englewood.
He remained in residence at Saint Cecilia's until his death.
