Hubert Lou Zieg, age 85 died Wednesday, April 30, 2003 in York. He was born on December 22, 1917 in York, Nebraska the second child of George and Anna (Ahlgren) Zieg. He graduated from York High School in 1935. On May 28, 1938 he was married to Sylvia Axtell in Papillion Nebraska. They celebrated 64 years, 11 months of marriage together.

Hubert worked as a carpenter for Anderson Lumber in York for several years out of high school and then began his own construction business. He owned the Zieg Tank business and painted and serviced water towers throughout Nebraska. He then changed his business focus to construction of homes during which time he developed and built the Edison addition as well as North Circle Drive addition.

He had great pride in the town of York and served the city and county with countless hours and energy. He served twelve years as city councilman and served as Mayor of York. He then served as York County Commissioner for 8 years. He was elected to the First Federal Board in 1976 and served for 12 years. He was a past president of the Izaak Walton League, past president of the Nebraska League of Municipalities and served on the board of Region V Mental Retardation Services.

Hubert always loved a good cigar, a sporty hat and a humorous story. His mechanical abilities were respected and appreciated by many as he always could "rig" something so it would work better. He was never too busy to help a neighbor with a willing hand. He loved his hobby of radio controlled model airplanes and was a long standing member of the Thunderbirds.

He will be missed by his wife Sylvia of York; four children, Ed (Nancy) Zieg of West Lynn Oregon, Tim (Linda) Zieg of York and Dr. George Zieg and Michelle Zieg both of Omaha.

5 grandchildren, Cary (Laura) Zieg of Lincoln, NE, Craig Zieg of Houston, Texas, Michael Zieg of Denver, Colorado, Jason Pardun of Oxford, Mississippi, and Shannon (James) Carrier of Darien, Connecticut; four great-grandchildren and his brother Robert (Mary) Zieg of West Palm Beach, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a young brother Charles, and a granddaughter, Gina.

Memorial services were held Monday May 5, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church in York with the Reverend Harry Brown officiating. Private family interment. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or to Hospice of Nebraska.
