Alex was the twin brother to Tommy Cooper. The baby boys were named after their two grandfathers Thomas Cooper and Alexander Adam. The twins' mother died just 9 days after giving birth to the boys. It was decided that the babies would go to live with their maternal grandparents Alex and Jannet Adam at Lot 12N, Concession 14, Wellesley Township, Waterloo County, Ontario. The farm was known as Sunny Home. Tommy and Alex attended Rural Union School No. 2 and 13, Peel and Wellesley.
Alex married Marjorie Lauretta "Laura" Rennie, daughter of William Archibald Rennie and his wife Mary Jane McKane, in November 1930.
