Horace Ivan May was born and raised in Minneapolis. He attended North High, and graduated from the University of Minnesota with degrees in History and Elementary Phy. Ed. His early teaching carrier was interrupted by service in the Navy. He was the Chief Pharmacist Mate aboard the U.S.S. Sullivans during W.W.II. Horace moved to Bemidji where he became the elementary Phy. Ed. teacher for the Bemidji School District. He coached the high school baseball team for many years. He also coached the high school golf team as well as elementary basketball teams. During the summers, he owned a driving range. An elementary school in Bemidji that bears his name honors Horace's many years of service to the community.
