Evelyn Gail Brogan, 96, died October 31, 2012 at the Baptist Home, Bismarck. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Evelyn was born September 24, 1916 in Big Grove Township, Johnson County near Solon, Iowa. She was the seventh of nine children born to Thomas E. Brogan and Mae Lola (Ring) Brogan. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

She experienced a lifetime of earning her own way. Her first job was at the age of 12 helping an expectant neighbor with daily tasks. After working as a car hop at a local establishment for a short while, she was employed at a local cabin camp doing a variety of jobs including cooking and operating a small café. At the age of 17 she accompanied the owners to Waycross, Georgia where they built a new cabin camp. It was her first exposure to the broader world outside Iowa. When the need for help at the camp diminished, she worked at a hotel in Waycross. Later she wrote about her minority friends and coworkers and commented on her first awareness of the social injustices of the south at that time.

She returned to Iowa, where she was employed in Cedar Rapids. Here she met Robert N. Killen. On February 26, 1938 they began a marriage of twenty-five years. They lived in various towns in Iowa with Robert working in State Parks for the Iowa Conservation Commission. In 1959 they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. She worked at Campbell's Nursery and Garden Center in Lincoln until retirement. While working there, in addition to other duties including management, she made thousands of bows for holiday arrangements she crafted and for single sales to customers. She also made many arrangements on her own for gifts to friends and family. She kept close contact with her siblings and family. In 1978 she and one brother, two sisters and other family members travelled together to Europe. For many years she went to Florida with her sister Mearl in the winter to sell Christmas trees for their brother Arthur's business and to vacation afterwards. She loved Christmas and made it special for others. She also loved to grow flowers, fish, play cards and dance. In 1996 she moved to Bismarck to be near family. In 2000 she traveled from here to China with a tour group.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a half-brother Sylvester and all of her siblings -- Hazel, Oral, Mearl, Mabel, Pearl, Lola, Arthur and Maynard as well as a special friend and dancing partner, Carl Pett.

The family expresses special thanks to the staff of the Baptist Home. Memorials may be sent to McCabe UMC, Bismarck, building addition.
