James Kearney enlisted as a Private in Company G of the 1st United States Infantry Regiment on March 7th, 1842, at Troy, New York, for five years’ service, at the time he was described as being 21 years of age, was 5 ft. 8 in. tall, of a ruddy complexion with blue eyes, brown hair and was employed as a laborer; honorably discharged on March 7th, 1847, at Tampico, Mexico, upon the expiration of his term of service. Enlisted as a Private in Company L of the 1st United States Artillery Regiment on July 16th, 1847, at Cumberland, _____, for one years’ service; promoted to Sergeant, no date; honorably discharged on July 15th, 1848, at Vera Cruz, Mexico, to re-enlist. Enlisted as a Private in Company L of the 1st United States Artillery Regiment on July 15th, 1848, at Vera Cruz, Mexico, for five years’ service; promoted to Sergeant, no date; honorably discharged on February 15th, 1853, at the Columbia Barracks, Oregon, per Special Order No. 4, Pacific Division. Enlisted as a Private in Company B of the 1st United States Artillery Regiment on January 22nd, 1855, at Fortress Monroe, Virginia, for five years’ service; promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant with the Regimental Field & Staff, no date; honorably discharged on November 22nd, 1859, at Moultrieville, South Carolina, to re-enlist. Enlisted as Quartermaster Sergeant a with the Regimental Field & Staff of the 1st United States Artillery Regiment on November 22nd, 1859, at Moultrieville, South Carolina, for five years’ service; promoted to Ordnance Sergeant on January 18th, 1860; on a leave of absence from February 18th, 1862 to May 18th, 1863; honorably discharged on March 15th, 1864, at Washington, D.C., to re-enlist. Enrolled and was mustered into service as Captain of Company E on 67th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 12th, 1862, for three years’ service; resigned his commission on May 19th, 1863, and was honorably discharged on June 1st, 1863. Enlisted as an Ordnance Sergeant in the Ordnance Department, United States Army, on March 15th, 1864, at Washington, D.C., for three years’ service; honorably discharged on March 15th, 1867, at Charleston, South Carolina, upon the expiration of his term of service.
