James William "Will" Chase was the son of Nathan Chase and Nancy Mariah Ramsower Chase. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Bates County, Missouri where many family members lived. Will had a younger sister Ida Jane who died at age 23 and a brother George Evan Chase. He married Martha White in 1889 and they had six children. In 1900 the family moved to Woodward County, Oklahoma and then in 1910 to Pawnee County, Oklahoma where he lived until his death.
