Amelia Edith Murphy Jacks, 86, a lifelong Lewiston resident and retired office manager, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Lewiston Rehabilitation and Care Center of complications of diabetes.
She was born May 25, 1914, to Frank and Louisa Aquino Murphy at Lewiston. After graduating from Lewiston High School in 1932, she attended Lewiston Business College, from which she graduated with honors.
Her first employer was the U.S. Department of Labor Employment Service in Lewiston, where she met her future husband.
She and Edwin Lough Jacks were married in 1937. During World War II, she worked for the Immigration and Naturalization Service at the Japanese internment camp near Kooskia. She later spent more than 20 years with Twin City Sales Yard and later for nine years for Lipps Insurance at Lewiston. Her husband died July 14, 1986.
She was an active member of the Lapwai Valley Grange, the Blue Mountain Good Sams, Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Society and Court Cataldo of the Catholic Daughters.
In 1982, she helped organize the first reunion of the Lewiston High School Class of 1932. Throughout her life, she enjoyed camping, fishing, art, crocheting and gardening.
Survivors include her daughter, DeAnn Scrabeck of Eagle, Wis.; her son, Kenneth Jacks of Lewiston; a sister, Esther Barton of Lewiston; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
The rosary will be recited at a vigil service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lewiston. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Leslie P. Kish as celebrant. Burial will follow at Normal Hill Cemetery in Lewiston.
The family suggests memorials to the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston.
