A graveside service for W. Merlin Quackenbush, 66, of 5555 Oregon 234, Central Point, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Memory Gardens in Medford.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Slawson's Chapel of the Valley in Grants Pass for Mr. Quackenbush, who passed away Thursday in a Caldwell, Idaho Hospital.

A longtime Rogue Valley orchardist and millwright, Mr. Quackenbush was born near Eagle Point on June 8, 1911. He was married in 1931 to the former Inez Gebhard. He is survived by his wife; a son, Dal Quackenbush of Sams Valley; a daughter, Mrs. John Miller of San Francisco; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

One of Mr. Quackenbush's three brothers, Carl Quackenbush of Medford, survives.

Mr. Quackenbush was known to many valley residents for his playing of the "musical saw". He entertained the soldiers at Camp White with his music from an ordinary handsaw during World War II and later played at churches and community affairs.

He was an elder in the Freedom Holiness Church in Grants Pass.

Since his retirement in 1972 as a millwright for Jeddeloh Brothers Sweed Mills in Gold Hill. Mr. Quackenbush enjoyed his hobby of archery at a self-built range at his home.

William Merlin Arens Quackenbush, known as Merlin, grew up and spent his entire life in southern Oregon. He worked as a farmer and as a millwright in lumber mills. He built bows and arrows as a hobby and was active in bow and arrow hunting clubs. He also played the musical saw with several music groups in the southern Oregon area.
