Henry F. Bartels, watchman at the Shell Oil Co., was fatally injured shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday when struck by an automobile at the intersection of Broadway and Ridge in Alton. On arrival at St. Joseph's Hospital he was pronunced dead.

Bartels was a native of Madison County, born February 27, 1882 in Ft. Russell township. Prior to residing in Wood River in 1931, he and his family had resided for a time in Roxann. He was one of the oldest watchmen at Shell, having been with the refinery since 1922. He lived at 437 East Ferguson, in Wood River.

Besides his widow, Mrs. Minnie Bartels, he is survived by a son, Pfc. Kenneth Bartels, who has been in military service in the Aleutians for the last 14 months, and a daughter, Miss Dolores, who resides at home. Bartels also leaves two brothers, Herman and Julius of Granite City, and a sister, Mrs. Louis Brave of Wood River.

The body may be viewed Thursday at 5 o'clock at the Streeper Funeral Home in Wood River. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home and conducted at the Evangelical church of Wood River at 2 o'clock Saturday. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery at Edwardsville.
