Mrs. Emma Henrietta Brauhn died peacefully on October 31, 2012 at the age of 95. Emma was a resident at Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids, Iowa for the last two years but had previously lived in Waterloo, Iowa since 1951.

Emma Henrietta (Holtmeyer) Brauhn was born on December 17, 1916 on the family farm in St. Elizabeth, Missouri. Her parents were Joseph and Margaret Holtmeyer. After attending a rural elementary school, Emma moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1936 and worked for the Federal Barge Lines traveling up and down the Mississippi River. She met her husband, Leon Henry Brauhn while working on the tow-boats and was married in Paducah, KY in June 1938.

Emma lived in East Dubuque, IL where her husband worked as the chief engineer for KDTH radio station. She later followed Leon in similar jobs to Ronceverte, WV, New Ulm, MN, Kirksville, MO, Garden City, KS, Montrose, CO, and finally to Waterloo, Iowa where Leon worked as the chief engineer for KXEL radio. Leon passed away in 1952 and Emma raised her four children in Waterloo. During these years, Emma worked at the Russell-Lamson Hotel, El Mecca Shrine Club, Elks Club, and the Holiday Inn in Waterloo and Cedar Falls as a waitress and hostess.

She finally retired in 1992 from the Holiday Inn. In this 40-year long career, Emma was known as "Hank" by all her co-workers and served Presidents and headline entertainers such as Johnny Cash and Louis Armstrong as they came through Waterloo and stayed at the hotel. On her retirement from the Cedar Falls Holiday Inn, she was given a lifetime pass to any Holiday Inn restaurant nation-wide.

Emma's greatest accomplishment was raising her four children.

She is survived by James Brauhn (Linn Grove, IA), Dr. Richard Brauhn (Dickinson, ND, Linda Brauhn Rehorst (Little Lake, MI), and Marilyn Brauhn Booth (Ames, IA). Emma had 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was a resident of Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids, IA since 2010 where she spent her last years with her son James and her grandson, Steve and his family. However, Emma was a long-time resident of Waterloo and was a very active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She is remembered for her sense of humor, devotion to her children, and outstanding work ethic.

Emma is preceded in death by her parents (Joseph and Margaret Holtmeyer), sister Margaret, and brothers Alphonse, Joseph, Frank, Otto, and Leo who are all interned in the St. Elizabeth, MO cemetery.
