A Norfolk native, Helen was formerly of Riddick Street in Norfolk and made her home with Doris & Ed over the past fifteen years. She was preceded in death by her husband and soulmate Clifford Alden Ryan, MMC, USN, Ret., a daughter Barbara B. Dawson, a granddaughter Sheryl A. Dawson and two brothers Kelly Porter Rock and Howard B. Rock.
Helen was a 50 plus member of the former Old Dominion Chapter 100, OES and Past Worthy Matron. She was a fifty-five year member of the former Ferebee Halstead United Memorial Methodist Church and a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Group with her late husband.
Helen known to her loved ones as Nanny was a generous, caring, very loving, kindhearted and gentle sweet woman. She was an avid gardener in her younger years and a wonderful cook. Her home was always open for a good hot meal.
Survivors include two daughters Doris B. Brady and husband Edward of Norfolk, VA; Betty Cook Davis and husband Harvey of Charleston, SC; seven grandchildren Rhonda B. Lucas and husband Jimmy; Tammy B. Craig and husband Jim all of Chesapeake, VA; Ronald R. Brady and wife LuAnn of Baltimore, MD; Dr. Linda Dawson of Chapel Hill, NC; Thomas Dawson, Jr. and wife Sharon of Holly Springs, NC; Debbie C. Tyner and husband Tommy of Jonesboro, GA; Bennie Cook and wife Lisa of Mt. Pleasant, SC; eighteen great grandchildren Adam, Brent, Carl, Morgan, Justin, Ross, Jennifer, Amanda, Gracie, Emmie, Rebecca, Zach, Eric, Jessie, Sarah, John, Bryan and Stacey and six great great grandchildren.
Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, September 7, 2012, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 818 Norview Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23509.
A celebration of Helen's life will be held Saturday, September 8, 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home officiated by The Rev. Joe MacDonald. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the Norfolk SPCA.
