Harry was born at Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana. After Harry left school, he worked at cigar making, ran a dairy and farmed for 8 years in Indiana. In September, 1901, he came to Colorado and settled in Mesa County. In 1902, he bought 20 acres and the following year, purchased 25 more acres. He had 36 acres in productive orchards, mostly peaches and apples. He was a practical fruit grower and equipped with every appliance possible, among these a 2 1/2 horsepower gasoline engine for spraying.

On August 4, 1886, he married Dora Musard (Mussard), 18 years old, in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. Their son, Walter Thomas, was born.

On May 28, 1888, he married Katie Pefferkorne, a native of Ohio, daughter of Chris and Helen (Bruner) Pefferkorne. Children: Harry Francis, Ruth E., and Charles Christian.
